DUS & Studio for Unsolicited Architecture – The Bucky Bar

The Bucky Bar es un proyecto temporal realizado en Rotterdam, hecho por dos oficinas muy jóvenes que entran a la idea de arquitectura no solicitada. Aquel concepto que la revista Volume ayudó a definir mejor cuando sacó una edición dedicada al tema.

La arquitectura no solicitada es la respuesta un tanto a la abundancia de arquitectos que hay en todo el mundo, y los pocos proyectos en que ellos tienen relevancia. La idea proviene un poco de ámbitos artísticos o de gestión cultural en donde los proyectos nacen netamente por la iniciativa de algún colectivo y no de forma Top-down, en donde un mecenas financia un proyecto.

La ventaja de no tener un cliente definido, es que las propuestas pueden abarcar temas mas contingentes y absorber las oportunidades subyacentes en la ciudad, que requieren la atención de gente capacitada y con ganas de cambiar las cosas.

The Bucky Bar es una estructura hecha solamente de paraguas. Una idea simple, con muy pocos recursos pero contundente e influyente a la vez. El nombre es una referencia directa a Buckminster Fuller, el hombre que soñaba con las esturcturas geodesicas y que, adelantado a su tiempo, empezó a esparcir la idea de desarrollo sustentable basado en la tecnologías simples.

El domo es un acto y refugio pensado solo para su propósito temporal: una fiesta espontánea alrededor de un poste del alumbrado público, lo que hace que el color naranjo de los paraguas se prenda durante la fría noche europea.

La espontaneidad y elegancia hace que el proyecto haya sido un exito para su escala. Unas 300 personas colmaron el refugio en un acto colectivo, bajo una estructura usualmente pensada para ser un refugio individual.

Además, la instalación es súper fácil, no necesitan trabajar en precio! Detrás de cada panel son las tiras adhesivas que simplemente presionando contra la pared a que se adhieran las dos superficies. Usted puede poner los paneles en la pared como se quiere producir bellas composiciones gráficas (composiciones alineado o no estructurados ...).
Usted no tiene que cubrir toda la superficie de las paredes. La cantidad de paneles se calcula a partir del suelo de la habitación a prueba de sonido (proporcione los paneles a la superficie de la pared igual a aproximadamente el 50% del suelo de la habitación).

JS Bach / Zaha Hadid Architects Chamber Music Hall for Manchester International Festival

The chamber music hall has been installed within Manchester Art Gallery for the duration of the Manchester International Festival 2009. From the festival program: “Across a series of nine concerts, three internationally acclaimed musicians will perform Bach’s solo instrumental works in this unique, intimate space. The aim: to create a near-perfect environment for the audience to experience some of the world’s most beautiful chamber music. A union of two true originals, three centuries apart.”

The concert series in the new chamber music hall will run until Sat, July 18. Daytime entry to the installation is free. It will be open for viewing July 4 – Aug 31, Tue – Sun (and Bank Holiday Mon) 10am - 5pm.
Here is a descriptive text from Zaha Hadid Architects:

Zaha Hadid Architects have created a unique chamber music hall specially designed to house solo performances of the exquisite music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

A voluminous ribbon swirls within the room, carving out a spatial and visual response to the intricate relationships of Bach’s harmonies. As the ribbon careens above the performer, cascades into the ground and wraps around the audience, the original room as a box is sculpted into fluid spaces swelling, merging, and slipping through one another.

The design process involved architectural considerations of scale, structure and acoustics to realize a dynamic formal dialogue inseparable from its intended purpose as an intimate chamber music hall. A layering of spaces and functions is achieved through the ribbon wrapping around itself, alternately compressing to the size of a handrail then stretching to enclose the full height of the room. Circulatory and visual connections are continually discovered as one passes through the multiple layers of space delineated by the ribbon.
The ribbon itself consists of a translucent fabric membrane articulated by an internal steel structure suspended from the ceiling. The surface of the fabric shell undulates in a constant but changing rhythm as it is stretched over the internal structure. It varies between the highly tensioned skin on the exterior of the ribbon and the soft billowing effect of the same fabric on the interior of the ribbon. Clear acrylic acoustic panels are suspended above the stage to reflect and disperse the sound, while remaining visually imperceptible within the fabric membrane. Programmed lighting and a series of dispersed musical recordings activate the spaces between the ribbon outside of performance times. The installation is designed to be transportable and re-installed in other similar venues.
Pivotal to its function is the performance of the ribbon. It has been designed to simultaneously enhance the acoustic experience of the concert while spatially defining a stage, an intimate enclosure, and passageways. It exists at a scale in which it is perceived as both an object floating in a room as well as a temporal architecture that invites one to enter, inhabit and explore.

BAD - Public Bath Equipment

Architects Sabine Mueller and Andreas Quednau explore an innovative formal vocabulary within a sustainable framework to create not just a functional bathing unit, but a public landmark within the site.
The 'BAD' Public Bath Equipment is a temporal architecture situated in the highly frequented leisure landscape of Solitude Palace Gardens close to Stuttgart, Germany. The bath is conceived of a 1,000-meter garden hose that plugs via a hydrant into the hidden existing infrastructure network and which can carry enough water to fill a bathtub for up to two persons to take a bath. Arranged in countless loops, the elastic hose forms the surface of a screen that catches the sun, thus heating the water in the hose. The used water is released to irrigate the surroundings.

The system interprets ways of inhabiting and interpreting the urbanized landscape, based on infrastructural realities and leisure conventions. It proposes an alternative, self-empowered form of leisure which draws on the anarchic expertise of everyday knowledge (the warming up of water in a garden hose) instead of investing in capital-intensive technology (like teflon-wear and carbon fiber bikes). The design brings together for a brief spatial moment the circuits that have become antipodes of the contemporary environment: infrastructure and nature. Without dogmatism it makes use of both of them, releasing their multiple potentials and extracting pleasure from the appropriation of already existing systems. Pushed to an extreme, beyond the criteria of efficiency, the subversive gesture explored further on the tectonic level. The rigid and elastic material qualities of wooden slats and the garden hose respectively are played out against each other and reintegrated.

Ganadores del Tercer Premio Internacional ACXT IDOM 2009 para Proyectos de Título

La oficina española ACXT (de quienes hemos publicado buena parte de sus proyectos) junto a IDOM, nos han enviado los resultados correspondientes al Tercer Premio Internacional ACXT-IDOM que ellos realizan año a año para estudiantes de arquitectura, y que tiene por objetivo seleccionar a los 3 ganadores con la mejor propuesta de título.

Se han dado a conocer los 3 proyectos premiados y a los 6 finalistas, de un total de 323 trabajos presentados. En su edición 2008-2009 se han recibieron 323 proyectos, de los cuales 4 se desarrollaban en Asia, 11 en Africa, 11 en América del Norte, 38 América Central y del Sur, y 259 en Europa. Los ganadores y finalistas después del salto.

El jurado de esta edición ha estado formado por Luis Fernández Galiano, Jordi Badia, Fernando de Mello Franco, Ana Morón Hernández, Galo Zayas Caravajal, Manuel Andrades Castro, Jon Zubiaurre Sasia, y como secretario Javier Pérez Uribarri.

Las sorpresas no siempre son agradables, pero entrar en un servicio publico y descubrir alli un enorme ramo de flores, supongo sorprenderia a cualquiera...y no importa que estas flores son de papel!!!Y tampoco importa que su principal funcion es avisar a los visitantes de que al salir del servicio ellos deberian de utilizar al nuevo sparay para refrescar el aire.
